Remember these cuties? Piper and Tate, born 30 or so hours apart from each other, met in the hospital last year. We couldn't resist having a little party for them, which also served as a good excuse to visit Chicago last weekend.
One year later:
The theme for the party was based on Dr. Suess's "Oh the Places You'll Go." Since I have a whole lot of time on my hands these days, I made the decorations. Beth was in charge of the (yummy!) food. I used balloons, suitcases, and maps to bring in the "going places" vibe.

A tradition in Beth's family is to have the kids crawl through the cake. Beth made a most adorable cake after the cover of the book for the kids to destroy...except they would not touch it. At all. They both looked at it warily and decided that cake was not for them. The only time Tate touched it is in the picture below and then he promptly flicked the frosting off. It was kind of anticlimactic!
Piper and Tate weren't exactly fans of their birthday hats, either.
My parents came to Chicago to deliver their gifts in person (thanks a million times over for coming!):
I admit to not always supporting the idea of a party for one year olds, who have no idea it's happening, but we had such a fun time seeing a few friends and, really, Tate gives us lots to celebrate.

Man, you do cute stuff. I would really like for you to have a tab on your right menu entitled "professional parties I've hosted" so it will be easier for me to highjack your ideas.

Wait...you and Beth don't happen to be teachers, do you?!!! SO CUTE!! Remember Bryker's one-year party? Ha!!
So glad you came - I loved seeing you guys. We miss having you around. I loved the party with the adorable food and decorations. I would seriously take a class from you in how to throw a party!
SO cute and SO sad I missed it. So, so, cute!
Alissa, this is awesome. Can I hire you to do all my kids bday parties?? Or even on a consultation basis? Miss you...
the first birthday is really a celebration of the mother having made it the whole year--and to be glad we aren't in labor again.
Wow, when you posted on my blog one time (probably Lily's birthday party last year) that you were excited for baby Tate to grow up so you could plan birthday parties, you weren't kidding. You went all out, girl! I still can't believe he's already a year old. (Mine too!) Happy Birthday, Tate!
