Did anyone else let a few tears escape when Obama spoke about teachers during last night's State of the Union address? I loved not only his reference to South Korea comparing its teachers to nation builders, but I also smiled through tears when the entire audience gave a standing ovation to the idea that America's teachers needed to be treated and compensated like "nation builders."
Teachers have lots of other synonyms - therapist, instructor, janitor, security guard, grader, PA system - but I know from experience that few Americans see us as nation builders. Of all the ideas Obama suggested last night, please let teachers as nation builders be one that sticks.
Nation builders! I love it.
Don't worry, I'm not getting completely sappy on you. I can't wait to see law makers put some real money where their mouths are.

alissa- i loved that part, too. i couldn't help but think of all my good friends who are nation builders and i'm so proud of all of you!
They never mention teachers in the arts, though, and we are losing those programs like crazy. )-;
