What the, what the!?

Most of you know that teaching 6th grade has been one of the great challenges of my life. However, it is certainly not without humor:

Question on a recent test I gave:

"Name and explain the 5 Pillars of Islam:"

Student's answer:

1. Pray toward Mecca five times a day (correct)
2. give alms to the poor (correct)
3. Declaration of Faith - declare and claim your faith (correct)
4. Fasting - run around Mecca really fast (uh....?)
5. hajj - take a pilgrimage to Mecca (correct)

It appears that I did not fully explain what "fasting" meant, but for a kid that doesn't know what it meant, that could certainly be a plausible explanation. Ha.

In other news, I recently conquered a great mountain (or something). I would like to draw your eye to the upper right corner of my blog, where I keep my 2009 book list. You might notice that I finished Team of Rivals! Matt doubted me all along; he thinks I read stupid books -- but I showed him! Triumphant ha ha!

Joking aside (yes, I am capable of reading serious books from time to time), that book is amazing. If you have even the slightest interest in Lincoln, this book will make you love the man and feel an enormous sense of gratitude for him and for God for placing this genius, quirky man in such a pivotal period of American history. [However, if you do not like reading history, maybe don't attempt this one. It's freaking long.]

I THINK SPRING IS HERE!

I like that version of fasting. We should try that sometime for fast sunday. Just run around the church really, ridiculously fast. So funny.

I started Team of Rivals a year ago, but have yet to finish it. I was impressed with what I read though. And I'm impressed with that kid's answer. So funny.
