Signs of the New Year

1. A totally packed gym. Since I'm not working right now and Matt was working from home, I could go to the gym today around 8:30 am. It was packed -- even then! Now, it is nothing like the zoo that I used to experience as a working person, trying to go to the gym between the hours of 4 and 10. I am, once again, grateful to be on maternity leave. Anyway. Here's my thing about the packed gym. I have been a very regular exerciser since I was 15. I don't really have ebbs and flows - I always work out (oh, except for my freshman year of college. I took a ballet class, then went to the Cannon Center, drank blue powerade, ate three rice krispy treats, and called it good). While I am really happy for people taking control of their lives by exercising in the new year, it bugs me that I - a regular - have to wait forever for the treadmill or my favorite elliptical-ish machines. And don't even get me started on the insanity that is the classes.
Another thing: the gym is a case study to prove that New Year's resolutions don't work. January is crrrrazy at the gym, early February is still busy, but by Valentine's Day, everything is back to normal.
In the spirit of New Year's resolutions not working, my 2010 resolutions are:
1. Do 100 push-ups (an effort to regain pre-pregnancy mid-section). Once I can get back up to regular sets of at least 20, I'm going to do this program.
2. Read Les Miserables.
3. Find part time work. Maybe. This one may or may not be possible.
4. Consider a triathlon. This involves me getting a bike and then overcoming my fears of riding bikes. I might not achieve this one either.

2. (now we're back to signs of the New Year) Salvation Army run. In the last hour, I have identified 19 sweaters, 9 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, and 5 pairs of shoes that are no longer stylish and to Salvation Army they go. This is making more breathing room in my joke of a closet and it makes me feel happier about shopping and adding new clothes to the rotation. Even though I feel like I make regular runs to Salvation Army, I am constantly amazed by what I decide to keep. Just today, I was folding up and bagging these not-so stylish any more clothes, and thinking to myself, WHY have you kept this???? I have way too many light-sweater-shirtish things that I wore in my early years of teaching. Time to mooooove on. I refuse to be one of those hoarders with 20 cats (the cats thing won't be too hard to achieve. I hate cats).

Two posts coming up (and I'm sure you're waiting with baited breath): Tate and Christmas. Some words about my 2009 readings.

And this is my 100th post. This shows that I am not at all a prolific blogger since I think I started blogging three years ago. Don't expect any reform there.

I got one of the last treadmills at 6 AM. It was insane.

Do you want to come and go through my out of style clothes? I will hold your baby for you while you do it. :) I haven't worked for 4 years and I'm still holding onto those clothes. Why?!?!

You should totally come do a triathlon this summer with me. I'm trying to convince everyone I know to do one, and I won't even have to convince you!

Okay, so I know this is a really late comment, but I totally agree with being bugged by the resolution gym-goers. I have hard time not rolling my eyes, and actually saying, "yeah, I'd like to see you last a month". I feel so mean thinking it, and snotty too, but it so bothers me. Why don't they start in some staggered format so we can weed out the non-committed?
